GREENE COUNTY
Greg and Anna Lawton have partnered with ATLAS Ministry, a non-denominational Christian organization in Greensboro, to administer the Lawton Family Scholarship Fund (LFSF).
The Lawton family has established a minimum 10-year commitment to award qualified students in Greene County the opportunity to pursue their college and vocational dreams. Students are able to fulfill their educational requirements for up to four years, provided they continue to meet the obligations of the LFSF, which represents one of the largest private scholarships available to students in Greene County. The Lawtons chose ATLAS Ministry as administrator because of its long history in providing a comprehensive approach to transforming the lives of individuals in Greene County from birth through high school and beyond.
“We feel blessed to connect with students in Greene County where this scholarship fund can inspire them to aspire to pursue their educational goals without undue financial burden,” the Lawtons said at the beginning of their philanthropic journey.
Hard work, focus and attention to task across the history of the Lawton fund clearly demonstrates this leads to the attainment of goals. LFSF scholars have maintained an overall GPA of 3.6 or better each semester, making academic achievement a large factor in the overall success of the program.
Since announcing the first two Lawton scholars in May 2015, the program has awarded up to four scholarships each year.
Six Lawton scholars have completed their four-year college degrees, with three graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Four Lawton scholars are employed in their degree fields, experiencing success in teaching, business management, city government programs, and as a professional flight instructor. Two have entered graduate studies in their chosen fields and are continuing to complete master’s degrees.
One key component to the LFSF is the importance the Lawtons place on mentoring each scholar. This unique program feature allows the family to keep in touch with each Lawton scholar throughout their school careers and beyond via Zoom calls, emails, texts, phone calls and personal catchups to provide helpful counsel.
Scholarship recipients appreciate the interaction and say this additional connection makes a difference in their journeys through school and beyond.
The Lawton Scholarship is available to any graduating senior from Greene County High School, Nathanael Greene Academy, or Lake Oconee Academy who meets the requirements to apply. It is a competitive scholarship that addresses students’ work in academics, leadership and community service as well as their involvement with ATLAS Ministry, from taking classes to volunteering.
