A bridge too far

Dear Editor,

It is Monday, October 19, 2026 and I just read this headline: “Putin proposes a trilateral summit to Trump and Xi next month to divide the world into areas of influence,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Think this is coincidental? Read on:“President Donald Trump canceled the sanctions that were supposed to come into effect today (against Russia) after the approval by Congress of the so-called Lindsey Graham Act, the law driven and now in memory of the late senator.”

Within 24 hours another headline:“Putin proposes a trilateral summit to Trump and Xi next month to divide the world into areas of influence,” according to the Wall Street Journal. The idea of a ‘new Yalta Conference’, like the one that brought together Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt in 1945, comes after the best week for Russia in four years.”

We are going down that proverbial “rabbit hole” at an alarming speed. Is ANYONE in Washington concerned? First, he talked with Putin, and then he invited Xi to the U.S. only to lavish him at a State dinner with praise and glory … it was a “love fest.” Anyone getting the picture? So, I won’t say that I am not scared, as should we all. The Republican Party once stood for limited government, active opposition to Soviet aggression, and a balanced budget. Now it stands only for Trump and his authoritarian neofascism, demanding total loyalty to him.”

This is a bridge too far – and too fast. It is up to the voters to end this nightmare. Before you blink and look away, I am going to list some of the areas that I have been fighting for, beginning with our unalienable rights (by definition, “fundamental human rights that cannot be sold, transferred, given away, or taken away by a government of authority”). I attend some rallies, and carry a sign that states, “HANDS OFF” our RIGHTS, our BODIES, IMMIGRANTS, NPR, PBS, OUR LIBRARIES, OUR SCHOOLS, SOCIAL SECURITY, MEDICARE, MEDICAID, OUR MUSEUMS, OUR BOOKS, and OUR NATIONAL PARKS.” The list continues to grow...WE have a choice and an obligation to stop the madness. I found a placard that states, “Are We Great Yet? ‘Cause I just feel embarrassed.” Nuf said!
