Eatonton native Frances Gorley Lowe has written Sunburst: A Generational Anthology of Education, Marriage, Love, Integrity, and Family, a memoir covering more than seven decades of stories and highlighting significant people, places and events throughout her life’s journey.
In Sunburst, Gorley Lowe shares many experiences of love, marriage, integrity, difficult lessons, and life in general. In the book, she describes “the strong shoulders of Putnam County,” her beloved principal, W.N. McGlockton, “Miss Sweetie,” and “Auntie” Andrea Mae Gorley, a public school teacher, among many others.
Gorley Lowe pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a registered nurse and dedicated 27 years to nursing while developing a booklet, Diabetic Foot Care, that is frequently given to diabetes patients. She was married to her husband, Marcus, for 50-plus years and is the mother of two adult children, Gregory and Melody, grandmother to six, and great-grandmother of two.
“Eatonton is a special place and has produced many talented people, such as Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple; Porter Sanford III, real-estate entrepreneur; S. Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, and many others,” Gorley Lowe pointed out. “I live by the old saying, ‘Don’t forget the bridge that brought you over.’ My first love will always be Eatonton, Georgia.”
It may have started for Gorley Lowe on the tranquil streets of old Eatonton, but ultimately, she found herself in the urban landscape of modern Los Angeles, where she continues to reside. Gorley Lowe said she wrote Sunburst to share history, sacrifices and success stories for generations to come and to families and institutions wanting to leave a rich legacy.
Previously, Gorley Lowe published Divine Directions, in which she shared the many times God had directed her in life.
