Home invasion suspect accidentally shoots self

A Madison woman was arrested Sept. 9 on multiple charges after an incident on Carey Station Road in Greene County.

Shannon Cerio Stephens, 36, faces charges of aggravated assault, burglary, home invasion and two counts of cruelty to children.

When deputies arrived at the Carey Station Road address, a female witness told them that her ex-girlfriend, Stephens, came to her home and started banging on her door, eventually forcing herself inside with a firearm in hand.

The witness said Stephens came into her room and began ransacking it and cursing her out while aiming the firearm at her according to reports.

The witness said she asked Stephens to leave, and she did only to return later. Stephens returned and began firing shots around the property according to the witness. While attempting to place the weapon into her waistband Stephens shot herself, and then Stephens transported herself to the hospital.

Another witness said Stephens burst into the residence and began waving the gun around. Stephens then ran out the door and later came back shooting multiple shots in the air, as many as 12 shots, according to the witness. The witness stated that Stephens then shot herself.

Dispatch also received a call of a person with a gunshot wound at Good Samaritan Hospital. Investigator Don Smith was contacted, and the scene was secured using crime scene tape and a crime scene log was started.

Deputies then went to Good Samaritan Hospital and made contact with Stephens.

After she was released from the hospital she was arrested and transported to the Green county jail. Stephens admitted to firing shots into the air outside and said she had accidentally shot herself with the gun according to the report.

She also admitted breaking out the window in the Chevy Cobalt that she owned to keep the two witnesses from driving it.

Stephens had driven herself to the hospital in a red Ki that was later located in the parking lot beside the emergency room with a pool in the floor on the driver’s side.
