Letter to the Editor: Our freedoms are on the ballot

Dear editor: History teaches us that women’s participation can make the difference between success and failure in the fight against extremism. Please commit to doing the most impactful thing you can do in the 2022 election to help protect our rights. VOTE. Our freedoms are on the ballot.

We have many talented and intelligent women running for seats in Georgia this November. The GA WIN List (Women in Numbers) has vetted, trained and endorsed several who are truly qualified to work for our rights.

There are many important issues facing our country in these times. But anyone reading this who is old enough to remember the struggle for reproductive rights some 50 years ago, can empathize with the gut feeling at hearing the verdict in Dobbs vs Jackson WHO. If you are not old enough to have witnessed the work for freedom, then know that unnamed women walked through fire on your behalf.

We are supporting Stacey Abrams for Governor. She aims to defend reproductive and privacy rights, promote equity in access to family planning programs, and fund rural hospitals through immediate Medicaid expansion.

It’s past time that we had a woman serving as Georgia’s Governor.

We are supporting State Senator Jen Jordan for Attorney General. In Georgia, the Attorney General is our top legal officer. That means that the job is to act as a lawyer for all Georgians._ It’s never been more important that Georgia has a qualified attorney general who understands the issues of reproductive and privacy rights. It’s past time that we had a woman serving as Georgia’s Attorney General.

We are supporting Representative Bee Nguyen for Secretary of State. The fights for reproductive freedom and the freedom to vote are inextricably linked, and extremists create barriers to the ballot box in order to block us from electing leaders who truly represent the values of the majority. Nguyen has dedicated her career to these issues. It’s past time that we had a woman serving as Georgia’s Secretary of State.

Their leadership in elective office has been steadfast. These women are the hope for the daughters and granddaughters in our state. These women embody character, integrity, diversity, vision, and yes, empathy and understanding about women and empowerment. If you don’t believe us, check out their webpage and their legislative history. Women! Pay attention. You are half the sky. It’s time for change. Your vote counts. Make it so. For our children. Early voting starts on Oct 17.
