As summer pressures increased for many local families, the Greene County Food Pantry is working alongside community partners to keep food accessible across Greene County.
Recent efforts include the Feed the Need summer food drive hosted by the Lake Oconee branch of BankSouth, as well as a recent distribution event in partnership with Golden Harvest Food Bank.
Through Feed the Need, the community contributed more than $25,000 and approximately 1,500 pounds of food and household items. The donations will help the pantry continue serving children, senior citizens, and families during a season when grocery costs often rise, and food donations typically decline.
BankSouth supported the drive by hosting the event at its Lake Oconee branch, promoting the effort and encouraging participation from employees and customers. The partnership helped raise awareness of the pantry’s work and the ongoing need for food assistance throughout Greene County.
The pantry’s partnership with Golden Harvest Food Bank also provided additional food directly to local residents. Officials said the distribution was another example of how regional organizations, local businesses, and volunteers can work together to support families in need.
The Greene County Food Pantry serves about 600 households each month, representing roughly 1,600 individuals. Children and senior citizens account for nearly 60% of those receiving assistance.
Community support efforts will continue throughout July. CW Smith Insurance will host a food drive July 13–17, followed by Greensboro Tire Pros July 20–24.
