Pen to paper: Former MCHS basketball player Shay Brown signs with Huntingdon

Morgan County girl’s basketball star Shay Brown committed to Huntingdon College located in Montgomery, Alabama last Saturday afternoon.

Multiple family members and former coaches made it to the school’s auditorium around 3:00 p.m. to watch Brown get on stage and sign her letter of intent to play for the Lady Hawks.

Brown acknowledged how big of a role her family played in her decision to play at the collegiate level.

“My family supported me throughout and supported going to school for basketball,” Brown said. “They played a big part in my basketball career and getting me to where I’m at.”

Brown was one of the most prolific scorers the Lady Bulldogs have seen come through the program, ending her MCHS career by scoring over 1,000 total points.

As a senior, Brown led the Lady Bulldogs out of their region and into the first round of the state playoffs. Throughout the season, Brown averaged 14 points and almost three assists per game.

Heading into college, Brown understands there are some aspects of her game she needs to improve both on and off the court.

“I always want to get better than I am now,” Brown said. “I want to become more responsible and take more responsibility for all the stuff that I do as well as get better on defense.”

Even with her doubts, Brown got it done on the defensive side of the ball. She ended up leading the team in steals, averaging just over two per game and recorded 12 blocks in 27 games.

Her success on the court led to long conversations with Huntingdon’s assistant coach Paige Ward and eventually an offer from the Hawks’ head coach Paige Huff.

Brown expressed how welcoming Huntingdon’s coaching staff was to her while she was out on the recruiting trail.

“They welcomed me so much,” Brown said. “I love the coaches, the players I met and the campus. Coach Ward and coach Huff made me feel like family, and I like their coaching style.”

Brown will join five other Georgia natives on the roster and is expected to continue to play as a quick guard that gets up and down the court well.
