Lake Country students head to Georgia Tech

GREENE COUNTY

Community pride was buzzing as the Lake Country Yellow Jackets Fan Club hosted a special luncheon on June 10 at Lake Oconee Bistro to honor an elite group of local high school seniors.

Each of these standout students has been officially accepted to the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and will begin their collegiate careers in Atlanta this fall.

The event brought together proud parents and distinguished alumni to celebrate the dedication and hard work these students demonstrated throughout their high school journeys.

This year, Georgia Tech received a highly competitive admissions pool of nearly 68,000 applications. The overall acceptance rate was approximately 16%, with in-state applicants at 28% and international applicants at 9%. The local future Yellow Jackets are among the 8,715 students ultimately admitted to the 2026 first-year cohort.

These incoming freshmen will pursue a wide range of rigorous academic programs. Across the class, 42% plan to study engineering, 22% sciences, and 15% computing, with the remainder pursuing degrees in business, design, and liberal arts.

During the luncheon, attendees enjoyed a keynote address and a lighthearted “roasting” by Bob Nash, a Lake Country Yellow Jackets member, who praised the students for their academic excellence and civic leadership. As the honorees prepare to head to “The Flats” at the North Avenue Trade School, the community celebrates not only their acceptance but also their future potential.

Addressing the graduates, Larry Wylie offered an inspiring message.

“To our newest Yellow Jackets: you have proven that you have the intellect and the grit to tackle any challenge. As you step onto Georgia Tech’s campus this fall, remember that you carry the hopes and pride of the entire Lake Oconee community with you. Do not just dream of the future — roll up your sleeves, embrace the challenges, and build it.”

The incoming freshmen will officially join the Georgia Tech community in August.
