Ronald Blair hosts youth camp in Tiger Stadium
Current NFL defensive end and Greene County alum Ronald Blair hosted his third-annual All-Star youth football camp in Tiger Stadium this past weekend.
The camp was free for all participants and had about 100 kids in attendance learning directly from Blair and other former collegiate or professional players.
The five-hour event allowed kids of all ages to work on specific skills with specific position coaches. It didn’t matter what position they played, Blair and the staff made sure every player rotated to different position drills.
From catching balls as a wide receiver to reach blocking as a lineman, the first half of the camp worked on all the fundamentals. After the lunch break midway through, the fun began. The camp transitioned
The camp transitioned to more playful scrimmaging for the last hour or two. Younger and older age groups paired together to play two-hand touch on half the field to work on all the skills they had just learned.
Bringing a youth camp of this magnitude to Greene County provides opportunities for kids who might not have them otherwise. This comes from there being no local camp while Blair was a Tiger, and he wants to give back.
Around this time last year, Blair believed the camp’s impact had positive benefits for any kid who wanted to come participate and still does.
“I want to help give the kids tools to put in their tool box,” Blair said. “Whether they play the game or not, I want to give kids life lessons that I’ve learned. Because you can learn a lot of lessons in the game.”
With Greene County’s head coach Terrance Banks continuously trying to develop the team mentality, Blair’s camp further helps with that by bringing kids together with a similar goal in mind.
Not only do events like these promote the local youth football leagues, but it also gets future Tigers ready for the high school level.
