Dr. Nic Chronos of Lake Country Medical Group is spearheading local efforts to supply desperately needed medical supplies into the war zone in Ukraine, as well as assist in the evacuation of medically fragile children to the United States and the European Union.
Lake Country Medical is partnering with Dr. Mark Poznansky of Harvard Medical and Massachusetts General, who has direct connections to specific doctors and regional hospitals in Ukraine.
Lake Country Medical has been involved in numerous meetings and webinars via Zoom with doctors in Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa and even the Donbas region of Ukraine since the Russian invasion started on Feb. 24. These meetings have led to a better understanding of the medical needs of the Ukrainian people.
Their medical supply needs are staggering. The barbaric atrocities conducted by the Russian troops have stripped hospitals and medical facilities of everything from ambulances to medical supplies to beds. These doctors desperately need everything from antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs to trauma and surgical kits and everything in between.
There are stories about doctors not even having sutures to close shrapnel wounds on a 14-year-old boy and using a borrowed knitting needle and thread instead. Email notifications have detailed the evacuation of a badly burned child flown from Warsaw, Poland to one of the best burn centers in the United States, Doctors Hospital of Augusta, Georgia. There are many organizations trying to help the Ukraine people with humanitarian aid but very few, if any, are able to get medical supplies into the war zone.
Due to a strong personal and professional relationship between Dr. Chronos and Dr. Poznansky, the logistical supply lines have been identified, the needs of the doctors have been established, evacuation corridors have been developed, and the Lake Country Medical Aid for Ukraine Foundation has been established and is in the process of raising funds to support these efforts.
The foundation will host a fundraising event at The Oconee Brewery in Greensboro, Georgia on Sunday, June 26, from 4-7 p.m. Live entertainment will be provided by Scott Deering and the Usual Suspects, and Tim Cadiere and The Washboard Road Band. Tickets are $100 and will include two drink coupons.
