Uncle Remus Museum to offer free admission

PUTNAM COUNTY

Eatonton’s world-famous Uncle Remus Museum will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence by offering free admission and storytelling July 3.

The museum dedicated to the life and times of Uncle Remus author Joel Chandler Harris, who grew up in Eatonton, opens that day at 10 a.m., with stories scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., before a 5 p.m. closing time.

Located at 214 S. Oak St., in Eatonton, the unique museum opened in 1963 to preserve Harris’ Tales of Uncle Remus, but later broadened its scope by adding the Ezell Room to provide an interpretation of early life in Putnam County, as well as a re-creation of the J.A. Turner Office and Library, a representation of Turner’s influence on a young Harris.
