Teachers of the Year

Educators honored by Morgan County BOE

At the Morgan County Charter School System (MCCSS) Board of Education meeting held May 9, the Morgan County 2022 retirees, Teachers of the Year and Support Persons of the Year were recognized by the board and respective principals of each school. Family and friends gathered at the Morgan County High School (MCHS) auditorium to celebrate these honorable MCCSS employees.

The Morgan County Primary School (MCPS) Principal Stacy Chapman recognized Alvona Armstrong as the MCPS Support Person of the Year. She has been at the primary school for 15 years working with the special needs students. “She is one of the people in our building that doesn’t have a lot of words, but when she does speak, she means what she is saying. She loves our special needs babies,”

Chapman also recognized the MCPS Teacher of the Year Lamb Eggers. She has been at the primary school for 22 years. “She is known for nurturing,” Chapman said. “She loves the primary school and she is at work first almost every single day. She loves us, and we love her.”

The Morgan County Elementary School (MCES) Principal Linda Smith recognized Erica Brown as the MCES Support Person of the Year. She has been at MCES for six years. “She is our spreadsheet queen,” Smith said. “Give her what you need, and in a minute you’ll have a spreadsheet.” Her colleagues say she is warm, friendly and loved by the children.

Smith also recognized the MCES Teacher of the Year Lisa Harris. She has taught for 21 years and has been at MCES for 15 years. Her colleagues say she is a dedicated and an exceptional teacher that exhibits extensive knowledge of her subject.

The Morgan County Middle School (MCMS) Principal Hillary Meeler recognized Sarah Robertson as the MCMS Support Person of the Year. Before becoming the school counselor, she was a special education teacher at MCMS for 11 years. Her colleagues say Sarah keeps a smile on her face, and it spreads to everyone else throughout the building. “Sarah was born to be a counselor,” Meeler said. “She goes above and beyond to help all students and teachers at MCMS, and she does it constantly with a smile on her face.”

Meeler also recognized the MCMS Teacher of the Year Carisa Elam. “Her music and chorus program at MCMS is arguably one of the best in the state,” Meeler said. “Her students receive superiors every year in their Large Group Performance Evaluations.” Her colleagues say she is passionate about what she does. She is professional about doing the business of her program and represents our school very well.

MCHS Principal Miki Edwards recognized Jimmy Segrest as the MCHS Support Person of the Year. “There really aren’t enough words to describe the amount of work that he puts in as the head of maintenance in our building,” Edwards said. “He brings with him a very rich background of having been a contractor and business owner, so he sees things so differently than the rest of us. He teaches us so much. … We are very grateful for all the work that he has done.”

Edwards also recognized the MCHS Teacher of the Year LaReece Stewart. “She is one of the hardest workers that I have ever met,” Edwards said. Her colleagues say she is an amazing educator that pours her heart and mind into her students. She can be found early in the morning or late in the afternoon in her room conferencing, tutoring or counseling her students.
