Lady Gators aim to build toward future in offseason

After reaching the GIAA Final Four last season, the Gatewood Lady Gators have quickly shifted their focus toward the future.

Under head coach Ferdinand Farley, the program is using the summer months to lay the groundwork for another successful season, emphasizing strength training, skill development, and team chemistry as players prepare for the challenges ahead.

“We’re trying to transition into our offseason workouts,” Farley said last week. “We’re pretty much just trying to get stronger, faster, and bigger this summer.”

While Gatewood graduated a talented senior class that helped guide the Lady Gators to a Final Four appearance, Farley said he believes the foundation they established will continue to benefit the program.

“I’m super excited about the foundation we set last year with our seniors from last year making it to the Final Four,” he said. “The only thing we can do is get better and try to get better each and every day.”

The Lady Gators will look to senior leaders Avery Hill and Lauren Paxson to help guide a roster that includes a promising group of sophomores expected to take on larger roles this season.

“I think our biggest success this year is going to come from communication,” Farley said. 'Communication on offense and defense, understanding what we're supposed to be doing, and teamwork. That's what we've been preaching since the first of June.”

Alongside improving communication, Farley has focused on paying attention to the smaller aspects of the game that can make a big difference during the season.

“We’re trying to get more shots up this summer and working on fundamentals,” he said. “We're trying to make sure we clean those up throughout the summer. That’s our biggest thing this summer, just cleaning up fundamentals and still dominating the details of the game.”

Farley said the team’s cohesion was among its greatest strengths during last year’s playoff run and remains a cornerstone of the program’s identity.

“The biggest strength I think we had last year and have coming back this year is our togetherness,” Farley said. “Learning to play for one another and loving each other. That's a big part of what we try to do as a unit as Lady Gators’ basketball.”

As summer workouts continue, Farley said he hopes his team will keep building on the culture that helped fuel last season’s success.

“Our biggest goal for this year is just to keep putting everything together day by day, month by month, season by season,” the third-year coach said. “Just keep going and try to build, build, build.”

With two experienced seniors leading the way and several younger players stepping into larger roles, Farley hopes and expects the work being done this summer will help set the stage for another successful season.
