Morgan County T&F sends 20-plus athletes to state sectionals

The Morgan County track and field program had a successful outing at the Region 4-AAA meet last week.

According to MCHS head coach Dusty Hawkins, the girls placed second, while the boys finished third overall.

Morgan County also qualified more than 20-plus athletes from both teams for the GHSA Class AAA state sectionals, which will be held at East Jackson High School on Saturday, May 7.

Jacere Cooper won his second straight region title with a throw of 44-07.50.

On the other hand, Jamiah Cox also won the region championship on the girls’ side with a throw of 32-02.50. She also placed second in the discus competition with a toss of 85-07.

In distance, Morgan County freshman Sam Wingfield won both the 3200-meter (10:27.52) and 1600-meter races (4:41.45), respectively.

Josh Jones dominated the hurdles races for the Dogs. He won both the 300-meter (38.14) and 110-meter (14.57) hurdle competitions.

Also in the field events, Ariana Edwards qualified for sections in the high jump with a fourth-place mark of 4-06. La’Meysia Wade finished second in the long jump (16-05) and third in the triple jump (32-07), respectively.

The rest of the qualifiers from the boys’ races were Shep Spinks (2nd, 1600-meter); Tyson Frederick (3rd, 1600-meter); Dylan Hawk (3rd, 3200-meter); Jared Gilbert (3rd, 100-meter), Brandon Lange (4th, 3200-meter).

The rest of the qualifiers from the girls’ races were Drew Biersmith (2nd, 3200-meter; 3rd, 1600-meter); Mary Ella Weldon (3rd, 3200-meter); Kymora Smith (3rd, 100-meter).

Also, the boys’ 4x800-meter relay (Andrew Whitten, Elijah Cook, Spinks and Frederick) and 4x100-meter relay (Gilbert, Jones, Rodney Stephens and Jaydon Dorsey) teams qualified for sectionals. The girls’ 4x800-meter relay (Haedyn Crumbley, Mary Patrick Greenfield, Hannah Long and Carolyn Strickland) and 4x100-meter relay (Wade, Smith Gabrielle Massey and Nariyah Burke) teams are also moving on

The sectional meet will feature runners from GHSA Regions 1, 3, 4 and 8 in Commerce. The four other Class AAA regions (2,5,6,7) will compete in sectionals at the Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross on the same day.

Top qualifiers from both sectionals will then move on to the GHSA Track & Field State Championships, which wil be held at four different locations across the state.
