Brown returns home to help lead Lady Dogs

Morgan County is bringing one of its own back home.

Former Lady Bulldog standout Alexis Brown has been named co-head coach of the Morgan County girls basketball team, joining Cody Anderson in a unique leadership arrangement designed to build on the program’s recent success.

For Brown, the opportunity to return to the school where she starred as a player is a full-circle moment.

“It’s special,” Brown told the Lake Oconee News. “Morgan County has always been home. The basketball program and the community helped shape me into who I am today, so to have the opportunity to come back and pour into the next generation of players means a lot.”

Brown was a key member of Morgan County’s 2016 state championship team and went on to build her coaching résumé after her playing career at Georgia Southern. Most recently, she coached at Newton in Covington, where she continued to develop young players and gain valuable experience on the sidelines.

Brown also helped the Lady Rams win a state championship in 2025.

Now she returns to Madison to help guide a program that has enjoyed significant success in recent years. Under former head coach Milfred Franklin, the Lady Bulldogs advanced from the second round of the state playoffs to the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and eventually the Final Four.

Brown said she is excited to inherit a talented group of players while helping continue the standard that has already been established.

“The foundation is already there,” Brown said. “These girls know how to work, and they know what it takes to compete. We’re looking to build relationships, continue developing skills, and make sure we’re ready to compete every time we step on the floor.”

Anderson said the chance to bring Brown back to Morgan County was a major factor in creating the co-head coaching arrangement.

“The biggest draw in all this was the chance to bring Alexis back home,” Anderson said. “She’s had an incredible playing career. She’s had a very distinguished young coaching career, and the chance to get her in and hopefully play a role in supporting her and helping mold her — and ultimately her being the future of our girls basketball program — was something I was really excited about.”

The arrangement will see Anderson oversee both the boys and girls programs during the upcoming season. He will remain heavily involved with practices, game preparation, and coaching during games, while Brown will take on a significant role in managing the girls program’s day-to-day operations.

“This first year, I’m going to coach both teams,” Anderson said. “They’re going to see the same thing out of me on the boys side as they are on the girls side. I’m going to be involved in practice, game planning, and all of those things.

“But specifically on the girls side, Coach Brown is going to have a very high load of preparing her to be the next head coach.”

Anderson believes the new structure can strengthen both basketball programs by creating a unified vision.

“I think boys and girls basketball in high school is at its best when they’re on one page and one accord,” Anderson said. “The opportunity to oversee that and figure out how we can push both programs forward under one unified program umbrella was exciting.”

As summer workouts begin, Brown and Anderson are focused on building relationships with players and establishing expectations as they prepare for the future.

For Brown, however, the opportunity is about more than basketball.

“It’s an honor to come back to a place that has meant so much to me,” she said. “I’m excited to get to work and help these young women continue the tradition that’s already been built here.”
