G-P Madison Plywood celebrates Earth Day, Career Tech

MORGAN COUNTY

Georgia-Pacific Madison marked Earth Day on April 22 by partnering with Morgan County students for a hands-on environmental learning experience, planting two native trees in the school’s arboretum.

The mill donated a live oak and a sassafras tree, and students took part in the planting, reinforcing the importance of stewardship and sustainability within their local community.

“My students gained firsthand experience through this hands-on activity made possible by GP Madison,” said Jennifer Mestres, Morgan County High School environmental science teacher.

More than 90% of the fresh fiber used in Georgia-Pacific products is grown in the United States. From responsible sourcing and mapping endangered forests to supporting wildlife conservation, using renewable energy sources, and reducing emissions and waste, the company emphasizes a forward-looking approach to its operations.

On April 28, GP Madison also sponsored the Be Pro Be Proud Georgia mobile simulator experience, giving more than 200 students hands-on exposure to skilled trades and manufacturing careers.

“We thank Georgia-Pacific Madison Plywood for supporting this project and giving our students the chance to experience the Be Pro Be Proud tour,” said Jennifer Butler, director of Morgan County Career Academy. “Their partnership is helping inspire a new generation of pride, progress, and professionals for America’s skilled workforce.”

The Be Pro Be Proud Georgia mobile workshop is a specially outfitted semi-trailer that transforms into an interactive learning environment. Inside, students rotate through high-tech simulators and stations that replicate real-world jobs in advanced manufacturing, construction, utilities, transportation, and more.

These experiences provide students with tangible exposure to skilled-trade pathways, bridging classroom learning with real-world career opportunities in their region.

“We know the value of partnerships,” said Wesley Stone, plant manager at Georgia-Pacific Madison Plywood. “By working with students of all ages, we’re showing them our values of environmental and social stewardship, and at the same time helping them discover that skilled trades equal career growth.”
