Letter to the Editor: Too much negativity

Dear Editor,

The following was on my mind over a week ago, but as with most people, life takes precedence. Today, I received an election card from Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, prompting me to respond. A little over a week ago, I also received election cards from both candidates, Rick Jackson and Burt Jones. Each was designed to criticize the other's character.

As I read them, I asked myself, “Which one of these men would you buy a used car from?” These men are politicians. Today, they seem to pave the way for lawyers and used car salesmen to be elevated to a higher level.

Today, I received another card from Burt Jones stating that he is “leading the fight to strengthen election integrity.” I find myself asking where integrity is in any of it.

My thoughts may not carry much weight, but as for me, I will not vote for either one of these candidates. I would prefer to see information about how elected officials plan to address the issues that most directly affect local communities—counties, the state, and the country—rather than being bombarded with negativity.

It seems that if one candidate had taken the high road, ignored the other, and simply focused on presenting a positive message, it might have reflected the kind of election integrity we once knew. It was never perfect, but I don’t remember the level of viciousness we see today. We are deeply divided, and a line has been drawn in the sand.

Each of these men has spent millions trying to defeat the other. There was a time when opposing sides could argue over how to solve problems—both recognized the issues but disagreed on solutions—then go to lunch together and play golf on Saturday, while their wives went shopping together. I don’t know if that America will ever return.

But the rest of the world is watching, and I believe there is one in total control. I believe we are witnessing the unfolding of prophecy. The time has never been more important for people to decide concerning their eternity. That decision is based solely on a man known as Jesus Christ. Ask about Him and find out why.

As an addendum, I recently heard of the assassination attempt on our president, which only reinforces my concerns about today’s political climate.
