Lake Oconee Academy’s baseball team capped off another dominant region run in dramatic fashion, sweeping Washington-Wilkes in a three-game series to secure its third consecutive region championship.
The title-clinching series featured a mix of dominance and late-game grit from one of the top-ranked teams in Class A Division II, as the Titans rolled through Game 1 with a 13-2 win, survived a tight 3-1 finish in Game 2, and pulled out an 8-7 thriller in Game 3.
“It’s really special,” Lake Oconee Academy head coach Mark Miller said. “Really proud of the guys for winning another region championship. Different year, somewhat different players, but the same standard. That’s three in a row now, which is a great accomplishment for their effort.”
Lake Oconee Academy set the tone immediately in the opener, exploding for a 13-2 win to put the series—and the region title—within reach. In Game 2, the stakes were clear: a win would clinch the championship outright. The Titans delivered behind a complete-game effort on the mound from Ty Hiter, who helped secure a 3-1 victory.
With the region crown already clinched, Game 3 became more about pride and momentum than pressure.
Still, neither team treated it lightly. Washington-Wilkes pushed Lake Oconee Academy to the limit, and the Titans found themselves trailing 6-1 at one point. Rather than folding, they mounted a comeback that carried into the final inning.
“I just challenged our guys to compete,” Miller said. “We didn’t want to take that game off. Ironically, we got down 6-1 and wound up winning 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh. Not easy by any means, but a good finish to our region schedule.”
The comeback victory underscored what has defined Lake Oconee Academy throughout its championship run: resilience, depth, and a veteran core that has been through postseason battles before.
“This group has been battle-tested,” Miller said. “We’ve talked about it all year—we’ve been to the Final Four, we’ve been to the Elite Eight. That experience matters. I think that’s part of what helped us secure another region championship.”
Beyond the trophy, the Titans have been building toward a deeper postseason goal. Miller described the team’s season in three phases: non-region play as “season one,” region play as “season two,” and the postseason as “season three.”
“Season two is where you want to run the region, and we did that,” Miller said. “Now we’ve got season three. We want to win the whole thing this time. These guys have their eyes set on a state championship.”
Before turning the page to the playoffs, Lake Oconee Academy will use a challenging stretch of non-region games as preparation. The Titans will face a demanding slate that includes matchups against Social Circle, ACE Charter, and Athens Academy in a four-game, five-day stretch following spring break.
Miller has embraced the challenge as a final proving ground before postseason play begins.
“I kind of schedule that as our own personal ‘heck week,’” he said. “By the time we get through it, we should really be ready to go for the playoffs.”
