Despite two snowstorms and one ice storm — all on Sundays in January and February — the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro was still able to gather and donate hundreds of cans of food for the Greene County Food Pantry.
The church leader for this effort, Carla Pinkney, said, “The weather made it tough this year, but we managed to finish strong.”
She added that, in addition to the Souper Bowl of Caring effort, $1,500 was also raised to support Our Father’s Kitchen, which provides free lunches to people in need every Saturday of the year.
From humble beginnings in 1990 at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina, the Souper Bowl of Caring has grown into a nationwide movement. It has grown to include thousands of churches, as well as business and civic organizations. Since its inception, more than $220,000,000 in food and money has been donated to combat hunger throughout the country.
The First Presbyterian Church, a PC (USA) church, is located at 117 S. Main St. (next to the Post Office) in downtown Greensboro.
Sunday services are at 11 a.m., preceded by Scripture Study at 9:45 a.m.
