Tigers earn All-Region awards

EDITOR'S NOTE: This article was written before but published after the arrest and firing of head coach Darius Robinson.

The Greene County football team recently had more than a dozen players named to the All-Region team.

The Tigers had 13 players earn postseason honors for their performances on the field this past season.

Greene County had seven players named to the All-Region first team.

On offense, running back Travez Gibson and receiver Dontriel Grable were recognized, along with offensive linemen Ezekiel Frederick and Kayden Drake. Defensive lineman Roman Brown and outside linebacker August Haynes were on the first-team defense.

The Tigers also had six players earn second-team honors, with three on offense and four on defense.

Quarterback Landon Garretson, receiver Kalil Dorsey, and offensive lineman Jailyn McKellar represented the offense. On defense, the selected players were defensive lineman Demond Copeland, linebackers JaQuez Hull and Jordan Walton, along with defensive back Kaden Cummings.

Greene County is coming off one of its worst seasons in recent memory under the direction of new head coach Darius Robinson. The Tigers finished 2-9 overall with a loss to Early County in the first round of the playoffs.

However, most of Greene County’s roster was young, and having 13 players named to the All-Region roster suggests the future is bright under Robinson. The Tigers will return seven of 13 players who earned postseason honors. They are Frederick, Drake, Brown, Dorsey, Cummings, Walton, and Hull.

“They continue to grow and make strides towards the expectation,” Robinson said. “They already know that the clock for the 2026 season started on Monday. We came back in, got dressed out, and did squats. We worked out, did power cleans, and did our normal deal. In January, we’re going to hit the offseason workout regimen hard, and it’s going to roll right into speed training, and we’re going to go into spring ball. We’re going to look up, and it’s going to be July going into August, and it’s going to be time to play football again.”

Robinson also mentioned after the season that the most important thing he learned about his players was that they cared for each other.

“They care about the school, they care about this community, and they’re going to work extremely hard,” he said.

“Case in point is that many people, at the start of the season, might have just given up or thrown in the towel, but these kids stay resilient amidst my expectations; they have remained steady, and those expectations are going to continue to be unwavering, but they keep showing up, they keep wanting to improve and develop. I’m excited about the future with these young guys now having a year in the weight room under their belts and more coaching being provided, to see what they can showcase on the football field on Friday nights.”
