The Gatewood Gators’ football season officially came to a close last Wednesday evening with the annual postseason banquet at the Eatonton-based school.
The event offered a mix of pride and perspective, as head coach Jeff Ratliff reflected on his team’s 2025 campaign and handed out year-end awards.
Coming off several strong seasons, the Gators entered this year’s campaign facing significant challenges. Injuries hit early, and depth remained thin all season long, with Gatewood dressing approximately 25 players each week. Still, Ratliff said the defining traits of his 2025 team were consistency and commitment.
“There was never a week when they weren’t focused,” the coach stated. “They gave me everything they had. With all the adversity we faced, we didn’t make excuses. We showed up week in and week out, and we played hard every week.”
Gatewood finished the season 4-8 but remained competitive throughout the schedule. With just one exception, Ratliff suggested the Gators had chances to win every game. That resilience carried them into the postseason, where they advanced to the second round of the GIAA Class 2A playoffs.
“We were one of the last eight playing, and that’s okay,” Ratliff said. “But our expectations don’t change. Every year, the goal is to win a state championship.”
While the record did not meet the program’s long-term standard, Ratliff emphasized that effort was never an issue. He said preparation was the cornerstone for the season, sharing a quote he left players with at the banquet: “When your reward is in the preparation, you can live with the results.”
Preparation and leadership also figured prominently in determining who received the team’s postseason awards.
“All of our voting is done by the team,” Ratliff said. “You can’t argue with who they chose. They know who puts in the work.”
Ben Branne was named the Most Valuable Player and the Offensive Player of the Year. Fellow senior Mason Sinclair took home Defensive Player of the Year accolades and was also recognized as the team’s Scholar Athlete, sporting an impressive 4.09 GPA.
The Gators also celebrated standout performances on the statewide level, as Brannen, Sinclair, and Colt Jenkins were named All-State selections. Ratliff called Jenkins’ honor “well deserved” and said having three All-State players “says a lot about this senior class.”
Team captains included seniors Brannen, Sinclair, and Jenkins, plus Mikey Padula, an honor Ratliff considers one of the most meaningful distinctions within the program.
“We’ve had several of these seniors come all the way through our program, from elementary school to varsity,” he said. “I love them and appreciate everything they’ve poured into Gatewood football.”
With the football season closed, Ratliff is already turning the page. He said offseason workouts for the Gators’ 2026 football campaign will begin soon, with winter conditioning helping to lay the foundation for next fall.
“The juniors are on the clock now,” he said. “We’ll get back to work, get stronger, and get ready to make our next run.”
