Letter to the Editor: The color purple

Dear Editor,

Advent is the liturgical season preceding Christmas, during which Christians around the world patiently and hopefully await the Nativity of the Lord. This year, Advent begins on Nov. 30 and lasts until Dec. 24.

In Latin, the word advent means “a coming” or “an arrival.”

Purple, the color of Advent, represents preparation, repentance, and royalty. It is also said to promote a sense of harmony between mind and emotion, contributing to greater spiritual focus and stability. Prayers during this season often center around hope, joy, and renewal. During Advent, we are encouraged to pray for peace both in our hearts and in the world.

The provision of food to people in need is regarded as a metaphor for the coming of Christ at Christmas.

This act of charity is a profound way to live out the Christmas spirit and to prepare spiritually for Christ’s birth.

Having been born in Bethlehem, which means “House of Bread,” Jesus famously declared, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). The act of feeding the hungry, both physically and spiritually, reflects His teaching.

All the volunteers at our local food pantries, the Madison Morgan Community Food Pantry, and the Caring Place, by continuing this work, especially during Advent, directly tie the act of providing food with the spirit of the Christmas season.

During Advent, the charitable act of assisting those who face food insecurity is a traditional way to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. This Advent, may we all embrace the color purple and seek to serve the brotherhood of man better.
