Letter to the Editor: Immigrants want to earn an honest wage

Dear Editor,

If you’ve ever visited a Home Depot, especially in metro Atlanta, you’ve likely seen men standing outside hoping to find work. These are day laborers, primarily though not exclusively Hispanic.

I’ve seen them waiting in the rain, the cold, and under the blistering summer sun. They are not asking for handouts; they are asking for a chance to earn an honest day’s wage.

Yet, the Trump administration’s masked ICE agents have repeatedly raided Home Depot parking lots around the country to round up supposed “illegal immigrants.” Let’s be clear: these men are out in public, visibly seeking work, not hiding or exploiting the system. They are not sitting at home watching telenovelas. They are not living on government benefits or shopping at Costco with SNAP cards. They are braving unsafe, unpredictable conditions every day just to work.

Why is this acceptable to so many of Trump’s supporters? Why is creating a fair, humane pathway to citizenship so wrong for people who are already contributing through hard work? And why is it acceptable for masked agents to detain people without even revealing their identities? It feels like something out of a horror film.

Imagine, for a moment, that after several summer weekends on Lake Oconee, you sport a deep tan, get mistaken for an immigrant, and are taken away by masked men. How would you and your family feel? Put yourself in these people’s shoes for a moment.
