Dear editor,
In his first days back in office, President Trump has made sweeping changes that many view as dismantling America’s commitment to diversity.
Once a coat of many colors, our country is now on a very different and homogenous path. His elimination of federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has erased programs that valued unique qualities, guaranteed fair treatment, and fostered a sense of belonging for all individuals.
His halt to birthright citizenship further excludes hope for the marginalized among us. Long a right that has guaranteed citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, this foundational principle is now subject to scrutiny. Imagine couples perceived as “foreign” based on their appearance or accent who will now face hurdles to prove their newborn’s right to citizenship, while others who look “less foreign” are met with fewer questions.
Despite his prior experience in this role, President Trump notably failed to place his left hand on the Bible during his oath at the inauguration — a moment many viewed as both symbolic and revealing. His swift, dramatic policy decisions already stand in stark contrast to faith teachings that emphasize compassion, inclusion, and supporting the most marginalized among us.
