Dear Editor,
Our Board of Commissioners have decided that the best investment that they can make to support economic development is high-density residential. Why else do you fund a sewer line down the Richland Connector? There is no demand for sewer and no customers ready to sign up for sewer; this is a subsidy for developers. Now that taxpayers and Piedmont rate payers are helping fund the sewer line, the developers can bring, and I quote, “4,000 residential units ... and will increase the potential development density of real property within the area.”
That is apartments and townhomes. Let’s not forget this is only the start of what this will cost. That wastewater will need to be treated and will require an expansion of the treatment facility sooner than forecast. That will be a cost paid by the rate payers and the next expansion is estimated at around $15 million.
So the county is donating money to a project to benefit developers (look up the gratuity clause in the state constitution), Mr. Neal votes for the project as the vice chair of the Development Authority and as the president of Reynolds (conflict of interest), and our county manger sells this as economic development (just BS to line people’s pockets).I think I live in Bizarro World. Or to quote one of my favorite movies,“Thank you sir, may I have another.”
