Putnam County names Anthony as an assistant

The Putnam County football team has recently added former Lake Oconee Academy head coach Drew Anthony as an assistant coach.

War Eagles’ head coach Shaun Pope said he is happy to have Anthony join his staff.

“We are very grateful to have Coach Anthony and his family join our community and family,” Pope said in a text. “He brings a wealth of knowledge to our program, on and off the field. I’m excited and he is too as he has hit the ground running, building relationships with our young men and staff.”

Anthony was hired in February 2021 to become the new head coach at LOA. He oversaw the development of the elementary through high school programs before resigning last month. Anthony helped the Titans’ JV squad finish 2-4 in 2021.

Prior to his time at LOA, he was an assistant coach at Camden County after serving as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Buford for 14 years.

Anthony was named Assistant Coach of the Year at Buford. During his tenure there, the Wolves won 13 region and eight state championships. Anthony has also coached at Washington-Wilkes and was an offensive coordinator at Cedar Shoals.

Anthony said he is excited about the opportunity to stay in the area.

“Coach (Shaun) Pope has been really good to me,” Anthony said. “Dr. (Andrew) Cooper and his staff really care about kids. The staff at PCHS is great. It’s a good mix of veterans and young hungry coaches. The players are hard-nosed and hungry.”
