Madison police officers and Morgan County deputies chased a wanted man through the streets and alleys of downtown Madison on Sept. 14 before arresting him on North Main Street.
A warrant for the arrest of Jaborice Marico Moore, 30, of Madison, had been issued several weeks ago on assault charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly put his hands around the neck of a female. He now faces additional charges of obstruction and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
According to reports, Captain Joseph Pritchett learned that Moore was walking on North Main Street near Madison Drug Company and heading toward the square.
Sgt. Stacey Eaton of the Madison Police Department located Moore in the alley behind the Bank of Madison, but Moore fled when he saw Eaton and headed toward West Jefferson Street.
He later doubled back toward the bank and continued toward First Street. Eaton and Officer Amanda Brown then began chasing Moore.
According to the incident report, Moore was given several commands to stop running but refused to comply.
Moore ran inside an office building and emerged on North Main Street again.
Deputy Thomas Ptak saw Moore walking down the sidewalk while driving into Madison in his patrol car.
When Moore saw the deputy’s car, he ran back toward Hwy. 83 with Ptak in pursuit in his vehicle.
Ptak said he made eye contact with Moore and told him to stop once again, but Moore then ran back toward North Main Street, throwing a blue backpack onto the roof of the Merritt Law Firm building.
Ptak turned around, pulled onto North Main Street, and into Moore’s path.
Ptak drew his taser and ordered Moore to lay on the ground. This time, he complied. EMS was called to the scene because Ptak thought he heard Moore say he had swallowed some heroin. Narcan was almost administered, but Moore refused it.
The Madison Fire Department provided a ladder, and Eaton climbed onto the law firm's roof to retrieve the backpack.
A search revealed the backpack contained a substantial amount of suspected methamphetamine.
