The City of Madison has announced the imminent arrival of a brand-new 2024 Pierce Ascendant 110-foot Platform Quint fire truck. This vehicle will replace the 2003 Pierce 85-foot Platform Quint, which was purchased and used in 2016.
The new truck boasts a single-axle design, allowing for superior maneuverability through Madison’s streets. It has been customized to match the color scheme and striping of the new engine delivered in 2022.
Chief Brooks Pennington, Assistant Chief Daniel Pennington, and Division Chief Gene Porter traveled to the Pierce factory in Appleton, Wisc., from June 25 to 28 for a final inspection. The inspection, conducted after the truck’s construction, began in April, and included a thorough review and testing of all components.
After the inspection, the truck was sent to the dealer for a pre-delivery inspection and the mounting of additional accessories.
It is expected to arrive in Madison within the next few weeks. Some of the features of the new truck include a six-person cab, a 500-gallon water tank, red, white, and blue ladder rung lighting, and an around-the-truck camera system. These features, along with many others not listed, will ensure fast, efficient, and safe operation by Madison’s firefighters.
Firefighters will undergo specialized training on the new unit from Aug. 15-17, provided by both factory and dealer personnel.
Once training is complete, the truck will be ready for service.
“City Manager [John] Klimm recognized the critical need for updated equipment and worked to secure the funding and approval necessary for this purchase,” Division Chief Gene Porter said. “His vision and dedication to public safety have made this possible, and we are extremely grateful to both him and the mayor and council for their unwavering support.”
Madison Fire will host a public welcome event for the new truck later in the year. This event will allow residents to examine the latest trucks and other fire apparatus and equipment.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Madison Fire Department members and ask questions.
