Morgan Medical Center (MMC), a nationally recognized hospital and Level IV trauma center, has added board-certified general surgeon Dr. Sergio Mejias as its new chief medical officer (CMO) and key addition to the Outpatient Clinics’ surgical team.

“As a patient-focused center of excellence, Morgan Medical Center continues to move forward with that mission, thanks to the addition of Dr. Mejias,” Morgan Medical Center CPA and CEO Ralph A. Castillo said. “His impressive track record and leadership skills will be a huge asset to our hospital, helping us provide high-level, compassionate care to our neighbors who need it most.”

Dr. Mejias has dedicated his career to providing optimal, patient-centered surgical care. As a result, he is recognized as a frontrunner for Georgia in performing complex and minimally invasive surgeries.

He is also highly experienced in both open and minimally invasive techniques, including advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Using the da Vinci Surgical System, Dr. Mejias has performed more than 1,000 robotic procedures.

His areas of expertise include minimally invasive colon resections and small bowel surgery; foregut procedures such as stomach and hiatal hernia surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery; laparoscopic and robotic hernia repairs; complex ventral hernia repair; and anorectal procedures, among other procedures.

Dr. Mejias earned his medical degree and completed his general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. He has practiced general and colorectal surgery in Athens since 1999, and from 2016 to 2026, Dr. Mejias served as chief of surgery at St.
