Morgan BOC gets update on Rivian

During its Aug. 6 meeting, the Morgan County Board of Commissioners received an update about Rivian’s Georgia plant at Stanton Springs North.

District 3 commissioner Ben Riden provided the update after he went on a site tour with the Joint Development Authority of Jasper, Morgan, Newton & Walton Counties.

Riden discussed Rivian’s preliminary concept plans for the site's layout. He said Rivian plans to use 700 acres for the plant, with the rest of the acreage designated as open space. Current plans include buildings for stamping, painting, assembly, and final touches.

According to Riden, plans also include a battery component building for the storage and assembly of battery components only, and not for battery manufacturing or raw material storage.

Rivian also plans to run a railroad line between the Morgan-Walton line and the Unity Store area. A bridge or archway will be put over the spur at Hwy. 278 for traffic to cross the rail line.

Riden said Rivian has a Covington office and has been at Stanton Springs North three times a week to monitor ongoing site work. While no timeline has been announced for starting construction, Riden said a Rivian representative told the JDA that they aim to start in 2026 or 2027.

“I still don’t know what to think about them coming or not, but they were adamant that they were going to start construction in the next two years,” Riden said.
