Intercepted by PCSO and EPD
Two men who reportedly received a FedEx package containing marijuana from California last week are now in Putnam County jail.
Keirreon Alial Farley, 22, of Uncle Remus Court, Eatonton, and Jerrit Lorenzo Wyatt, 21, of Hayes Street, Madison, were arrested around 3:15 p.m. Oct. 26 and are facing charges of Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
The Drug Enforcement Agency of California notified the Georgia DEA that a package suspected to contain controlled substances was coming via FedEx to Eatonton, according to Putnam County Sheriff’s Lt. Harry Luke.
“So, we intercepted the package, and our K9, Nix, and a Georgia Dept. of Corrections K9 both alerted on the package,” Luke explained. “So, we got a search warrant for it and opened it.”
The box contained five large, sealed cans, the kind that usually contains food items such as canned vegetables for a restaurant.
“We opened one of the cans, and it had 1.2 pounds of medical-grade marijuana in it,” Luke said.
The law enforcement officers resealed the can and set up a controlled delivery of the package to the address on the box.
“The package got delivered and a few minutes later, these two people pulled up and got it and put it in their car,” Luke said. “When they drove away, we stopped them and the package was on their backseat.”
Authorities declined to say the address, but noted it was “within the city of Eatonton.” The residents turned out to be elderly relatives of one of the men who was arrested.
When authorities stopped the car, the driver, Farley, had $650 cash in $20 bills in his pockets, and the passenger, Wyatt, had approximately $4,700, mostly in $20s, in his pocket. Neither man has a job, according to the arrest report.
The value of the medical-grade marijuana in the cans is $92,000, according to Luke.
“So, even if they sold it on the street for half price, it was over $45,000 worth,” he added. “It’s common for them to have it shipped now instead of transporting it in an automobile from the states where marijuana is legal. Even with the shipping costs, they’re making a good profit if they don’t get caught.”
Luke said he and Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell worked together on the case.
“Having both agencies, Eatonton Police Department and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office working together makes it a lot easier and more successful combatting drugs on the streets in Eatonton and Putnam County,” Cardwell said.
