A Madison police officer received minor injuries during an altercation with a man who resisted arrest at the Pilot Truck Stop on Eatonton Road on May 13.

According to incident reports, law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the Pilot after a female called 911 from the restroom on behalf of another female who said a black male had assaulted her.

According to Corporal Stacey Eaton’s account of the incident, the female victim was shaken up and crying when officers arrived.

The victim told police that Michael Vance Dawkins, 36, “went crazy and when she tried to get away from him, he grabbed her arm which left a small scratch.” She also said that Dawkins was armed and had caused several bruises on her legs.

Sgt. Chad Lanier of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office made contact with Dawkins who was inside the store and screaming the victim’s name.

Eaton and Lanier spoke with Dawkins and patted him down for weapons, according to the report.

When they did, Dawkins became agitated and tried to leave the store.

When Dawkins resisted arrest, Officer Michael Maxwell, Sgt. Chase Young, Sgt. Joseph Pritchett arrived to assist Lanier and Eaton.

When Dawkins was taken to the floor, he kicked Maxwell and tore skin away from his middle finger. Dawkins was finally subdued and placed in Eaton’s patrol unit.

Dawkins was charged with obstruction of an officer. Further charges are pending.
