A Madison resident has been arrested on several charges after he allegedly threatened to kill customers on Aug. 23 at a Madison Waffle House.
Larry D. Smith, 65, faces two counts of obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers and making terroristic threats and acts.
According to reports, Officer Travis Stubbs responded to the area of Farmview Market on Eatonton Road regarding a man who was walking in the roadway and yelling at passing cars.
When Deputy Miguel Ocon and Stubbs arrived, Smith walked away yelling profanities at the two law enforcement officers.
Ten minutes later, Stubbs was dispatched to the Waffle House about a customer threatening to kill customers inside the business. The Waffle House employee who called 911 told Stubbs that Smith came into the store and became irate when the staff would not serve him free food. He then began throwing things and became aggressive with a male customer, according to reports.
Smith had left the Waffle House by the time Stubbs arrived, but Ocon intercepted Smith on top of the Exit 114 overpass.
According to the account submitted by Stubbs, he observed Ocon attempting to speak with Smith from a distance. Stubbs said Smith was verbally belligerent and began to turn and walk away from Ocon.
As Ocon attempted to stop him from leaving, Smith “jumped” on Ocon, according to the report.
Smith was actively resisting Ocon when Stubbs arrived but was placed on the ground and secured in handcuffs after a brief struggle. Smith was then placed in Stubbs’ patrol unit.
Smith originally told Stubbs his arm was hurt when Stubbs asked him if he wanted to go to the hospital, but he later refused treatment and asked to be taken to jail.
According to the report, Smith made numerous threats to Stubbs during transport to the jail and later became combative with officers who were walking him out of a holding cell.
