The stars and stripes will once more take over Lake Oconee this Independence Day as residents and visitors gather for the 7th annual Lake Oconee Fourth of July Boat Parade.
The community tradition in Morgan County has become one of the area’s most anticipated holiday events, bringing together families, friends, neighbors, and other boaters for an afternoon of patriotic celebration on the water.
Scheduled for 2 p.m. on July 4, the parade will again take place in the Morgan County portion of Lake Oconee, with organizers expecting another colorful display of American flags, inflatables, and creative decorations.
“It’s one of our favorite things that we look forward to every year,” organizer Lanier Massey said. “I hope with it being the 250th celebration everywhere this year that we can get even more boats involved.”
The parade route follows a loop format that was introduced last year after spectators requested a longer viewing experience. Boats will gather in a cove near the end of Appalachee Woods Trail in the Oconee Shores community before departing toward the Appalachee River. Once participants reach a large cove suitable for turning around, they’ll make their return trip and finish back where the parade began.
The expanded route has become popular with lakeside residents who invite friends and family to town specifically to watch the parade.
While the decorated boats are the centerpiece of the event, Massey said the atmosphere continues to grow each year as more families participate.
“For us, every year it feels like we have more kids and babies on board,” she said. “We love getting our theme together, getting the neighbors involved, loading up on the boat, and making it as tacky as we possibly can with American flags.”
Part of the fun comes from seeing how creative participants can be.
Among Massey’s favorite memories are small john boats carrying oversized American flags, elaborate inflatable displays, and a familiar face dressed as Uncle Sam.
“There’s always Uncle Sam on a jet ski,” she said with a laugh.
Longtime lake resident Joe Williamson, who helped start the parade seven years ago, is known for arriving in patriotic attire and helping set the festive tone. In recent years, participants have added giant inflatable eagles, Uncle Sam figures, George Washington decorations, and other red, white, and blue displays.
Along the route, boaters and spectators can even expect a cannon blast from one lakeside property, adding another unique Lake Oconee touch to the celebration.
“I feel like everybody’s kind of taken it and run with it,” Massey said. “The themes get better every year.”
Participants will also compete for honors in three categories: Most Patriotic, Most Creative, and Most Spirited. The spirited category recognizes the crews that bring the most energy and enthusiasm to the parade.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners, with organizers currently working with local businesses and marinas to secure donations. In past years, businesses such as Crowe Marine, Sugar Creek Marina, and other local sponsors have contributed prizes.
Whether entering a fully decorated pontoon boat or simply gathering along the shoreline to watch, Massey said the event is all about celebrating community and country.
“It’s just a fun way for everyone to come together,” she said. “Every year it gets a little bigger, a little more creative, and a little more special.”
