Lake Oconee Area Alumnae Chapter enters 15th year

Chartering the Lake Oconee Area Alumnae Chapter was conceived in the minds of Orian Motley, Barbara Fuqua, Janice Gallimore, Linda Williams, and Felicia Randolph. These members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recognized the need to bring initiated Sorors back into the sisterhood to serve rural areas. They worked diligently in this endeavor. They sent out a survey to determine the interest of those residing in the Georgia counties of Morgan, Greene, and Taliaferro. The interest group grew through much effort and planning until they completed the final paperwork. On April 23, 2007, 22 women were granted the charter to carry on the legacy of the sorority’s founders. The chapter’s primary focus is to serve and make an impactful change throughout the communities.

As we celebrate the 15th year of being Charted, the Lake Oconee Area Alumnae Chapter is mindful of the Sorority’s mission and continues to uphold the 5-Point Programmatic Thrust, where its members dedicate themselves to continue the development and implementation of outstanding Sisterhood, Scholarship, and (public) Service:

Service: • Economic Development (Habitat for Humanity, Back to School Rallies, Financial Fortitude, Census, Adopt-a-Highway, Christian Outreach)

• Educational Development (Youth Mentoring, Scholarship program)

• Political Awareness and Involvement/Social Action (Voter Registration Drives, Town Halls, Forums)

• International Awareness and Involvement (KIVA, Missionary Assistance in Haiti)

• Physical and Mental Health (Relay for Life, Health Fairs)

The Lake Oconee Area Alumnae Chapter continues to work throughout the community and is visible in civic, religious, academic, and political arenas.
