Two juveniles who went on a vandalism spree Aug. 3-4 are headed to the Wilkes County Regional Youth Detention Center as a result of their actions.
According to police reports, the first vandalism was reported at the Madison-Morgan Food Pantry.
The police report said that fire extinguisher chemicals were sprayed throughout the gym area where food is stored, and several cans of baked beans were thrown and splattered on the floor.
Footprint evidence uncovered at the scene, as well as information provided by neighborhood children, led the officer to the juvenile culprits, who confessed to the vandalism. No charges were filed but the boys were tasked with cleaning up the mess and other alternative punishments were assigned.
The next day, Aug. 4, a Madison police officer was dispatched to a March Street address in reference to a burglary. The complainant said someone kicked in the garage door to the home, which was under construction. According to the report, the inside of the home was in disarray with a total of 24 interior doors kicked down and broken, as well as four shattered windows.
A porcelain toilet had also been shattered.
Officer Travis Stubbs, aware of the previous vandalism and the footprint evidence, found footprint evidence at the scene that pointed to the same culprits.
The two boys ultimately admitted they had entered the March Street home and caused the damage.
They were then detained, fingerprinted, and scheduled to be sent to the Wilkes RYDC under the direction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
