GPD makes more arrests in drive-by shootings

The Greensboro Police Department (GPD) made another arrest with one more pending in connection with a drive-by shooting incident that occurred in the area of North Walnut, East Greene, and North East streets just after midnight on March 3.

Chief Rodricus Monford said investigators have continued to investigate the shooting incident by questioning witnesses and examining evidence gathered from search warrants. New evidence produced by the investigation led to the arrest of Zaeveon Zayne Smith, 19, of Union Point, on two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of criminal damage to property, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

DCorys Kavar Foster, 17, of Eatonton faces the same charges, but he was not at the high school when officers arrived to arrest him, according to the GPD. Law enforcement is currently attempting to locate him.

As reported in the March 15 edition of the Lake Oconee News, officers have already arrested Devantea Malik Dunn, 17, of Greensboro, and Ja’Marion Antonio Evans, 19, of Union Point on two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of second-degree criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police found more than 50 spent shell casings in the area, and two houses had bullet holes in them.

Police said multiple weapons were found after a search warrant was executed at 373 Canaan Circle in Greensboro on March 11.

Two pounds of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a large quantity of Claritin and Allegra – popular ingredients used in making methamphetamine – were also taken into evidence.

According to Monford, Mario Demond Kimbrough, 41, of Greensboro was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled substance (MDA), possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Desmond Michael Dunn, 22, of Greensboro was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance.

Warrants for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a controlled substance (MDA) were issued for Deidra Dunn, 43, of Greensboro.

According to reporting by Mark Engel in the March 8 issue of the Lake Oconee News, 2-year-old twin girls and a 4-year-old boy were sleeping in a home on East North East Street when the shootings occurred.

“Our girls didn’t wake up,” Kari Chitwood – the mother of the three children – told Lake Oconee News. “A bullet literally came within six feet of them, and they didn’t wake up.”

Chitwood said the family moved to Greensboro from Watkinsville and had always felt safe until the shooting incident.

Nelson said a lot of the rounds fired went up in the air perhaps as a way to send a message to someone. Citizens with information on the sale of illegal narcotics are urged to call the Greensboro Police Department and can remain anonymous.
