Former Greene County Sheriff Ricky Brown has passed away. Brown served as the Greene County Sheriff in the 1990s and ran again for the office in 2016.
Brown most recently served as the Chief Deputy at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
“Today was a very difficult day at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Sparta/Hancock County Detention Center and Sparta/ Hancock County E911 Center,” an entry posted on the HCSO Facebook page said. “It is with deep sympathy one of our beloved passed away, Chief Deputy Ricky Brown. Hancock County Sheriff’s Office is asking for prayers for the Brown family and the HCSO as they go through this difficult time.”
There was an outpouring of admiration and sympathy from friends on the social media site.
Marie Burden: “I sure hated to hear about Ricky. He was a good man and a great officer. He treated everyone the same and never failed to speak when I saw him.”
Michael Ferguson: “Prayers to the family of a great man and sheriff.” Condolences were also offered from Putnam County, Milledgeville and Taliaferro County.
Funeral arrangements had not been posted at press time.
Brown was a native of Greene County and graduated from Greene County High School in 1979. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Clark Atlanta University in 1983.
Upon graduation from college, Brown returned to Greene County and attended the Northeast Georgia Police Academy.
He began his career in law enforcement as an investigator in Greene County.
He also obtained correctional officer certification, taught classes at Savannah State University and amassed over 2,000 training hours over the course of his law enforcement career.
His son, Ricky Brown, is a deputy with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, starting his tenure there in 2020.
