EV charging stations coming to downtown Madison

The Madison City Council recently approved an agreement with Envirospark Networks, Incorporated, which will install electrical vehicle charging stations in downtown Madison.

The city has been in ongoing negotiations with Envirospark regarding the charging stations which will located behind the Madison Post Office on Hancock Street near its intersection with E. Washington Street.

Envirospark expects to install two 40-amp dual chargers and one single charger.

According to an Envirospark press release, “the Georgia-based electric vehicle (EV) charging company was awarded a federal government contract to design and install EV charging stations at locations run by federal agencies throughout the Southeast region of the United States in October of 2022. The contract, which includes a new $500 million budget ceiling for the region, came from the General Services Administration (GSA) amid a nationwide push for expanded EV infrastructure.”

“We are thrilled to be part of this federal push for improved EV infrastructure in the region and country,” EnviroSpark Co-founder and Chief Government Affairs Officer Stephanie Luques said. “In order to increase EV adoption rates and reap the benefits of lower carbon emissions, we must first build out charging infrastructure. Enviro-Spark is committed to that mission, and we are proud to be partnering with the GSA to bring EV access to federal agencies.”

Envirospark was founded in 2014 with two missions according to its website: “To raise awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles and to increase the availability of EV charging infrastructure.”

Envirospark currently has more than 5,500 charging ports that are installed from coast to coast.

Envirospark is a minority-owned business that is nationally certified by the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council.

According to City Planner Monica Callahan, the city will create an account for Envirospark and the company will reimburse Madison from the proceeds derived from products sold at the charging stations.
