Biden, Trump dominate Lake Country primaries

Voting results are in for the presidential primary in Greene and Morgan County as well as the Morgan SPLOST referendum.

According to Jennifer Doran, Morgan County’s Elections Director, 21.66 of Morgan County’s registered voters showed up to vote in the election. Republican Donald J. Trump received 2,390 votes or 86.85 percent of voters choosing to vote in the Republican primary.

Candidates who have dropped out of the race did poorly in the Morgan primary.

Nikki Haley garnered 10.72 percent of the vote.

Ron DeSantis placed third with 1.56 percent. Tim Scott received nine votes (0.33 percent) and Chris Christie received eight votes (or 0.29 percent).

Asa Hutchinson and David Stuckenberg each received one vote.

Joe Biden was the overwhelming favorite of voters who voted in the Morgan Democratic primary, receiving 517 votes — 94.86 percent. Two challengers received a total of 28 votes.

Morgan County’s latest SPLOST passed easily with nearly 70 percent of votes saying yes to the measure that will help the county build new fire stations and additional recreational facilities.

In Greene County, Donald Trump captured more than 80 percent of the vote (1,884 votes) in the Republican primary with Nikki Haley performing better there than in Morgan with 18.09 percent of the vote (425 votes). Ron DeSantis got 25 votes, Chris Christie eight votes, and Vivek Ramaswamy four votes. Tim Scott received three votes, and Perry Johnson one.

On the other side of the aisle, Joe Biden cleaned up with 544 votes or 93.96 percent of the Democratic vote in Greene County.

Dean Phillips and Marianne Williamson only managed a combined 35 votes.

Turnout was relatively low in Putnam County with 13.91 percent of the county’s voters participating in the Republican Primary. Of those, 1,988 chose Trump, good for 88.7 percent of the vote.

Haley came in second with 152 votes or 6.78 percent, followed by Ron DeSantis with 10.

Biden locked up the national primary Tuesday night with the delegates received in Georgia, and a small number of Putnam voters agreed. 

Out of 377 votes cast, Biden received 364 votes, or 96.6 percent. The primary elections for local and state elections will be held on May 21 and the General Election on Nov. 5. Runoffs are scheduled for June 18 and Dec. 3 if necessary.
