An Alabama man traveling with almost a pound of marijuana, which he said he planned to sell, was arrested by a Morgan County deputy March 27 following a traffic stop for speeding on I-20.
According to reports, Deputy Hannah Rickey stopped a Nissan Pathfinder after determining its speed to be 90 miles per hour. Rickey made contact with the driver, who was identified as Quincy Phillips.
Rickey noticed a smell of marijuana and asked Phillips about it.
He said he smoked some marijuana and had a small amount in the vehicle.
As the investigation continued, Phillips admitted he had marijuana in a red backpack in the backseat.
Rickey found four clear bags of marijuana in the backpack and a black container containing what Phillips said were “beans,” a nickname for ecstasy pills.
Phillips was taken to the Morgan County LEC due to the windy conditions on the interstate, and the investigation continued.
Phillips told deputies that he purchased 60 pills on Friday for $1 each and had sold six so far for $2 to $5 each. He had also separated 357 grams of marijuana into the four bags, all weighing approximately one ounce each.
Phillips, 39, of Midfield, Alabama, was charged with speeding (90 mph in a 70-mph zone), possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of Schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug-related objects, and driving with a suspended license.
Rickey made another significant drug arrest on April 1 when Cornelius Davon Moody, 28, of Riverdale, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and giving a false name and date of birth to law enforcement.
