A Flicker in the Dark
News flash from Hollywood: Oscar winner Emma Stone and Emmy-nominated writer-director Dave McCary have launched Fruit Tree, a new film/TV production company with a two-year first-look TV deal with A24, an American independent entertainment company that specializes in film and television production. The Stone-McCary partnership will produce movie projects across scripted, documentary, and unscripted formats.
And what is their first major project? A TV series adaption of the debut thriller novel, A Flicker in the Dark, by Stacy Willingham, a UGA grad with an MFA degree in writing from Savannah College of Art and Design. “Emma Stone got her hands on a Word document of my book back in 2020 and loved it,” Willingham revealed in a recent interview. “I am so excited about how it all has come together.”
Willingham will be Georgia Writers Museum’s “Meet the Author” presenter on Dec. 6, on A Flicker in the Dark, her New York Times best-selling book. The cost of the 7 p.m. event (doors open 6:30 p.m.) is $45 ($40 each for two or more tickets) and you can register for the event at GWM in Eatonton (109 S. Jefferson Ave.) or online at georgiawritersmuseum.org. Copies of A Flicker in the Dark also can be pre-ordered and Willingham will be signing copies following her GWM presentation.
Stone, who won an Oscar for her work in La La Land, also was nominated for an Academy
award for The Favourite, starred in Cruella for Disney, and was executive producer on that film.
Alongside Jonah Hill, Stone recently produced the Netflix miniseries Maniac which received a PGA Award.
After a long stint as a Saturday Night Live writer, McCary made his directing debut on Brigsby Bear, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and after strong reviews were acquired and released by Sony Pictures Classics. Stone and McCary also are life partners and were married in 2020.
