Greene County Extension held the dedication of the 4-H Teaching Food Lab to longtime volunteer Mrs. Sherley Selman on March 28.

For more than 35 years, Selman has not just been a 4-H volunteer but a superior educator in youth development with an emphasis on culinary and nutrition education for the youth of Greene County. Her journey back to Greene County began in 1987 with her family, following a long career in the United States military.

Selman does not believe in sitting down and doing nothing but is actively involved in her community. As a result of her background in Georgia 4-H, the motto of making the best better became synonymous with Selman pouring her time, talent, and resources into Greene County 4-H.

During her second career, she was a part-time program assistant with Greene County Extension for more than nine years. This followed continuing to volunteer to the program in numerous capacities such as summer camp, judging teams, annual rodeo, community service, and citizenship activities. However, Project Achievement is very close to her heart.

Project Achievement is a program in which 4-H’ers can present a demonstration or make a culinary meal for competition.

Before Gordon Ramsey was making little chefs, Selman was doing just that by helping youths learn about healthy eating, proper food preparation, and preparing delicious meals in a set amount of time that would make any chef proud.

As a result of Selman’s teaching, Greene County 4-H has had numerous first, second-and-third-place winners at the district and state levels.

For Selman, it goes way beyond the ribbons and accolades; it is about young women and young men developing the needed life skills for them to be successful, wherever the road of life takes them.

As a result of her dedicated service to empowering a new generation of young people, the Greene County 4-H Kitchen was renamed the Sherley Selman Teaching Food Lab.
