The Greensboro Business Association (GBA) is looking forward to its inaugural Mardi Gras on Main event on Feb. 18, in downtown Greensboro. The event will include a jambalaya and gumbo cook-off, with public tasting and voting beginning at noon, followed by a 3 p.m. awards ceremony.
The Mardi Gras on Main event is the first of several community-focused events to be hosted by GBA this year. Home cooks and professional chefs are encouraged to participate in the jambalaya and gumbo cook-off, with preregistration available online at gbageorgia.com/ mardi-gras-on-main.
Interested parties can register online or print an application and submit it with their registration fee to Lake & Local at 104 S. Main St., Greensboro, Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Those participating in the cook-off need to arrive by 8 a.m. on Saturday to begin cooking.
A 3- to 5-gallon pot of gumbo and a pan of jambalaya will need to be ready for public tasting by 12 p.m., which will be kicked off by a performance from the Greene County High School marching band.
Visitors can register for the public tasting, then sample the recipes created by each chef before casting votes for their favorites.
Guest judges, including Greensboro Mayor Corey Williams, also will cast votes in order for awards to be announced at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the cook-off and tasting, downtown merchants will be offering specials and giveaways throughout the day.
Visitors are encouraged to shop local merchants, including J.H. McCommons, Lake & Local, Genuine Georgia, Maggie Lane, The Pink Stitch, Broad St. and Main Antiques, and Bonnie’s Coffee Shop, among others.
Shopping begins at 10 a.m., tasting tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. and public tasting runs from noon to 2 p.m., with the awards ceremony an hour later. The cook-off and tasting will be held in the parking lot behind Hair Creations at 110 S. Main St., across from the Post Office.
GBA is a non-profit organization comprised of business owners in downtown Greensboro.
It exists to be a self-sustaining, non-profit proponent for the greater Greensboro business community, encompassing all businesses within city limits and interested businesses within the immediate area.
GBA seeks to provide opportunities for the continuing economic development of the Greensboro historic downtown area, as well as adjoining historic districts and areas, and promotes cooperation in activities with other organizations, such as the City of Greensboro, Greene County, and Main Street Program.
