Greensboro’s Lake Country Chorus (LCC) presented “On Broadway” last Thursday at Festival Hall, which was packed to capacity. Tony award-winning songs dating from the 1940s to the present were the order of the evening under the baton of vocal director Cathy (Cat) Williamson.
Greensboro’s Lake Country Chorus (LCC) presented “On Broadway” last Thursday at Festival Hall, which was packed to capacity. Tony award-winning songs dating from the 1940s to the present were the order of the evening under the baton of vocal director Cathy (Cat) Williamson.
The program truly was reminiscent of Broadway, with music, singers, and dancers from The Arts Barn, as well as dancing choreographed by Maureen ‘Mo’ Brower and Charlotte Mosteller.
Songs included “Magic to Do” from Pippin, featuring soloist Drace Langford; “Corner of the Sky” ( Pippin), “Ease on Down the Road” ( The Wiz), and “Seasons of Love” ( Rent) performed by a cappella ensemble, “Kids” ( Bye, Bye Birdie), “When I Grow Up” ( Matilda), “ The New Girl in Town” ( Hairspray), and “You Will be Found” ( Dear Evan Hansen), featuring soloists Dottie Mitchell, Beth Mappes, and Tina McCrary completing the first half of the evening’s performance with a medley from Smokey Joe’s Café.
Following intermission, the program opened with a cappella ensemble singing “Morning Hymn/Alleluia.” Next came Mosteller and Langford with “The Song That Goes Like This” from Spamalot, a duet of “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” ( Guys and Dolls), and “One Day More” ( Les Miserables). Then came “Oklahoma” and “Muddy Water” ( Big River), and “Make Them Hear You” ( Ragtime) with soloist Steve Pond.
The evening finished with “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha before all the performers received a rousing standing ovation.
The Arts Barn singers and dancers included Lillie Mae Colby, Mena Collins, Grace Garber, Smith Groeninger, Sadie Layson, Jordan Loh, Jenna Lukens, Harper McRae, Jonas Quinones, Luis Quinones, and Ellie Swymer. Helen Garcia-Carreras and Sha’kecia Mitchell instructed these youngsters.
