Haunted Eatonton returns this month

PUTNAM COUNTY

The ad for the 1984 hit movie, “Ghostbusters,” perfectly describes Eatonton this Halloween: “Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night?

Do you feel dread in your basement? Have you or your family ever seen a spook or ghost? If the answer is ‘yes,’ then don’t wait another minute. Call the professionals...”

In this case, the professionals are at the Georgia Writers Museum, presenting “Haunted Eatonton,” the annual downtown ghost tour, in conjunction with The Arts Barn, as the spookiest way to celebrate Halloween.

This year, four brand-new sites join the tour with super spooky stories, among them the Eatonton Presbyterian Church and the Eatonton Messenger building.

Plus, new stories for the always-favorite Panola Hall — with Sylvia, the most famous ghost in town — plus the Union Church Cemetery, the Old School History Museum, and the creepy courtyard of the 1816 Bronson House. By the way, did you know the Bronson House was once a popular tavern?

The 90-minute “Haunted Eatonton” walking tours will be held Oct. 24, 25, and 30, plus Nov. 1, for a unique post-Halloween thrill.

The first tour each night will depart GWM at 6 p.m. when Eatonton’s otherworldly residents come alive. The second tour each night will be for the very bravest, starting at 8:20 p.m. Tickets are $40 each or $35 each when purchasing two or more.

Come wander one of the most architecturally renowned and picturesque historic districts in Middle Georgia. The Arts Barn’s cast will reenact each spooky story with 100 percent accuracy (well, except for any parts of a story that are entirely made up).

When you are shaking in your boots as you feel the presence of eerie spirits, thank the ghostbusters who made it all happen, including such sponsors as Dot2Dot Inn, The Plaza Arts Center, and the Eatonton-Putnam Chamber of Commerce.

Don’t miss out on one of Eatonton’s most frightening — and fun! — annual events.
