The public is invited to attend the Greene County Historical Society meeting and program scheduled Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Historical Society History Museum located at 201 E. Greene St. in Greensboro.
The program titled “Union Point and White Plains Railroad Company 12 miles and 39 years of high hopes and broken dreams” will be presented by Kathy Graham. The presentation will give the history of the railroad, which opened for business Sept. 23, 1889, and closed Jan. 1, 1928.
Learn about the opening ceremony and the presidents and directors of this line. See photos of some of the locomotives and passenger cars used on this railroad.
Information about the railroad's route will be presented, and a 1916 validation map will be donated to the museum. Find out why Harry Hill, a celebrity conductor who helped to start the line, went to prison. Help solve a few mysteries about the operation of the locomotives on this line and the location of some of the railroad worker houses.
Hear stories presented by “Felix Reid Askew” and “Elder Willian Mooney Davis” and try your hand at moving a “railroad track” with a lining bar.
