Diamond Dogs land six on all-state teams

By Justin Hubbard

The news was not at all surprising but exciting nonetheless: Morgan County’s baseball team received six nominations to the annual Georgia Dugout Preview magazine all-state list.

Hunter Lane and Ethan Stamps received first-team selections. The duo led Morgan’s pitching staff throughout the 2018 season and were a major factor in the Diamond Dogs’ playoff run to the Final Four round. Lane was the 2017 Region 8-AAA pitcher of the year and Stamps received this year’s region pitcher of the year award last week.

Close behind them on the second team were Trey Patterson and Jaron Ferguson. Patterson and Ferguson patrolled the outfield for much of the season. Patterson also spent time at catcher and pitcher while Ferguson logged several innings of work on the mound, too.

Grant Cofer and Jacob Anderson rounded out Morgan’s all-state selections with appearances on the honorable mentions list. Cofer was the team’s rock at first base over the past few years but also pitched some in 2018. Anderson was an everyday starter in right field and served as the usual third man in the pitching rotation behind Lane and Stamps.

The Diamond Dogs went 26-13 during the 2018 season, which saw them win their second-straight Region 8-AAA championship and play into the Final Four round of the Class AAA state tournament.
