William Shirey, 76, of Greensboro, GA passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, GA.
A Memorial Service in celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
Born in Gary, IN on December 20, 1943, he was the son of the late Jack Andrew Shirey and Jean Evelyn Underwood Shirey. Bill graduated from Colorado State University as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He was married to Denise Ann McCafferty on October 3, 1970. He was a small animal Veterinarian in San Jose, California for 35 years, serving as President of the California Veterinary Medical Association and the CA delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association before retiring in 2007. In 2008 Bill and Denise moved to Reynolds on Lake Oconee. Bill was an avid golfer. He adored traveling and spending time with his family and friends. Bill was a storyteller who knew no strangers and he was a considerate, compassionate sounding board for all. He was a mentor to rising veterinarians and business students, and his dog, Charlie’s best friend. He was the Great Daddoon (the Wise and Wonderful) to his kids, Poppy-Monster to his granddaughters, “Uncle Bull” to his nieces and nephews, “Willius” to his Shirey siblings, “Dr. Doggie-Do-Do” to his McCafferty brothers and sisters-in-law, and “PETSDOC” to his community. He loved to laugh and be silly, having a nickname for all of his favorite animals and humans. With a soft spot for playing games and indulging his sweet tooth, he savored every day and moment. He will be eternally loved and always missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. James Alan Shirey.
Bill is survived by his wife, Denise, of Greensboro, GA; daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Bill Moss of Dallas, GA; son, Jack and daughter-in-law, Erin Shirey of Boise, ID; granddaughters Makenzie, Emerson, Delainy, Cassidy, and Finley; brother, Dr. Terry and sister-in-law, Carol Shirey of Wayland, MA; sister-in-law, Dr. Karen Shirey; his McCafferty sisters and brothers-in-law: Mary and Don Schneider, Peggy and Tom Thomas, Eileen and Bill Lank, Joan and Tim Brodnik, Maureen McCafferty and Tim McClintick, Debbie McCafferty and Cathy McCafferty and Roger Odenberg.
