William Hammett “Fuzzy” Lester

William Hammett “Fuzzy” Lester of Sparta, GA passed away at age 85, Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Born August 15, 1935, in Edwardsville, AL. William was born to the late Colon Lester and Frances Creel Lester. He was a graduate of Gordon College and on December 24, 1952, he married Eleanor Jeanette Coats. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He moved to Sparta in 1970 working as the local manager for the Georgia Power Company.

He retired in 2001 with 34 years with the Southern Company. During his working career, he was an active member of local organizations that promoted Sparta and Hancock County. He served as president of the Sparta Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and president of the Lions Club. He was a member of the Civitan Club and the Industrial Development Authority for Hancock County. He was also a Mason at the Masonic Lodge #442 F & AM in Sandersville, GA. Fuzzy was a member of the Sparta Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years. But most enjoyable was being on the Board of Directors for “We Direct Anything” over coffee in the mornings. His many interests included gardening, Georgia Bulldogs and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Ruark and husband Richard; granddaughter, Audrey Redmond and husband Kyle; grandson, Will Ruark and wife Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Caroline Redmond and Chandler Redmond all of who reside in Milledgeville, GA; and his sisters, Agnes Hatcher and Levie Mae Fillyaw. Several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Evelyn Lester. Preceding him in death were his siblings, Melvin Lester, Curtis Lester, Leroy Lester, Laura Rhoades, Odessa Scott and Jeanette Scott.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Griffin Memorial Gardens, 515 Dobbins Mill Road, Griffin, GA 30223 with Minister Estella Ellison officiating. The family requests any memorials be made to the Masonic Children’s Home, 1417 Nottingham Drive, Macon, GA 31211, or to the charity of your choice. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
